When your doctor says that surgery is your best option for a spinal condition (herniated disc, bulging disc, vertebral fracture, etc.) a lot runs through your mind. One important piece that may not come to mind at first is “how do I set my home up for success after surgery?” While it may not be your first thought, it’s an important one to ensure that you will be comfortable and able to follow-through on recovery instructions from your surgeon and care team.

Cane/Walker

Following surgery, mobility is an important factor in your recovery. While it may seem surprising, the sooner you able to be moving and walking the sooner you will begin to regain strength and feel better. Canes and/or walkers offer added support and security as you begin to move more and more frequently both in your house or outdoors.

Shower Chair

As part of your recovery, speak with your doctor and care team about caring for incisions, but often times you can quickly begin taking showers which can provide added comfort. The addition of a shower chair can provide you a more comfortable spot to enjoy the benefits of a warm shower while feeling comfortable and stable post-surgery without placing added strain on your back.

Support Positioners

Proper positioning for your recovery will play a significant role in how comfortable you will be following fusion, decompression, or stabilization surgery. Depending on the type of surgery required and the location of the spinal issue, (lumbar region, cervical, thoracic, sacral) finding a comfortable, supportive position is critical to successful outcomes. MyComfortMD offers multiple positioners and recovery instructions for most types of surgical processes.

In addition to these comforts, please be sure to follow any exercise and stretching instructions that your surgeon provides. Proper recovery depends on balancing rest and care with the ability to re-introduce movement as soon as possible following most procedures.
